Store cashiers hardly ever check the signature, it seems, so whether it's a signature or a "check for ID", it doesn't seem to matter much; and 2. When using my credit card at the post office, the person working there said that without a valid signature on the card, they could not accept it for payment. (Since it was also my debit card, I was able to use it for payment by putting in my PIN, but if it had been a vanilla credit card, they would not have accepted it without having a signature on the back.)
