Closet Organization – Five Quick & Dirty Tips

Organizing your closet is possible! Here are a few simple how-to’s for decluttering and organizing your closet.

  1. Empty out the closet completely. Yes, completely!
  2. While it’s empty, vacuum and dust the interior.
  3. Sort the clothing and accessories by categories: jackets, pants, skirts, shirts, shoes, belts, and so forth.
  4. Pick a category and start returning items from that group to the closet. When placing them in the closet, group them by color and by season. Don’t put clothes back that have stains or tears, are unworn, or are out of style.
  5. Hang the items ‘backwards’ Hanger on the a closet rod backward.(note the hanger in this picture). Once you wear the item, return it to the closet ‘forwards.’ At the end of the season all of the backward hangers are clothes you did not wear.

Bonus tip: Keep a paper bag in the bottom of your closet. During the season drop items into the bag you will no longer use. Once the bag is full take it to Goodwill or your favorite clothing charity.

    Hi Scott,

All great tips. But if I can add one more thing (because it’s what I do)…

Get yourself a good closet organizer system. It doesn’t have to be high-end or fancy but some double hanging rods and vertically stacked shelves will do wonders for organizing a closet!

I like the backwards hangar trick. It helps you to face the facts about the stuff you like but will never actually wear again. You can also try putting doubtful items in a trash bag. If you don’t pull them out and wear them in a years time just take ‘em to Salvation Army.

I have some sweaters from when I live in PA 20 years ago that still take up space in my closet. I’m pretty sure I haven’t worn them since. Charlotte, NC doesn’t get that cold. I don’t have a problem getting rid of other stuff, just sweaters. Maybe it’s nostalgia.

I also like the paper bag suggestion. I’m going to try that. However it’s going to be labeled with large letters and placed on my wife’s side of the closet :)

@Jim Deitzel – Nothing wrong with encouraging your wife to purge the closet by giving her a paper bag labeled ‘donations’ in LARGE letters! I keep a donate bag in my closet and recently put a big, warm wool sweater in the bag after not wearing it on my last ski trip. I realized I had not worn the sweater in 6 years!
